The loads on structures and infrastructures as well as their self-weight are as a set of forces that need to be always transmitted to the ground.This is achieved by means of a foundation,a system composed of a structural transitional element and the support ground, being the latter the component which frequently controls the foundation behavior.This Book includes a series of recommendations and concepts that can be useful in the phase of finding for a suitable foundation solution, in their pre-design phase and in the own foundation design.The final selection of a foundation and its design will require the use of the analytical and/or empirical methods discussed in this text, dedicated to estimate the bearing capacity and the potential settlements of foundations.Thanks to this, the Reader will have the necessary tools for his work as a Civil Engineer specialized in shallow and deep foundations. The Book gathers the different proposal of the main Spanish codes: "Código Técnico de la Edificación","Guía de Cimentaciones en Obras de Carretera" and ROM 0.5.Other bibliography is also included which allow expanding the knowledge discussed here

Torrijo Echarri, Francisco Javier Doctor en Geología e Ingeniero Civil. Profesor Contratado Doctor del Departamento de Ingeniería del Terreno de la Universitat Politècnica de Valéncia. Ha desarrollado su vida profesional en empresas geotécnicas, en el sector público y en el ámbito universitario. Es Subdirector del Departamento de Ingeniería del Terreno, investigador del mismo departamento y profesor visitante en diversas Universidades de Argentina, Ecuador y Perú. Imparte docencia en asignaturas de grado relacionadas con la Ingeniería Geotécnica y la Geología aplicada a la Ingeniería Civil. Sus líneas de investigación actuales se centran en el estudio del comportamiento tenso-deformacional de túneles y en el estudio de materiales evolucionables y su aplicación a las obras civiles. Garzón Roca, Julio Doctor Ingeniero de Caminos, Canales y Puertos. Profesor Asociado del Departamento de Ingeniería del Terreno de la Universitat Politècnica de Valéncia. Ha desarrollado su vida profesional en el ámbito universitario y como consultor independiente de estructuras y geotecnia. Imparte docencia en asignaturas de grado y máster relacionadas con la Ingeniería Geotécnica y la Geología Aplicada a la Ingeniería Civil. Ha sido investigador en el Departamento de Ingeniería de la Construcción y del Instituto de Ciencia y Tecnología del Hormigón, así como en el Departamento de Ingeniería Civil de la Universidade do Minho (Portugal). Su trayectoria científica y profesional ha sido reconocida por el Colegio de Ingenieros de Caminos, Canales y Puertos, quien le otorgó en 2015 el ¿Premio Ingeniero Joven¿. En la actualidad desarrolla su investigación en el Departamento de Ingeniería del Terreno, centrándose sus líneas de investigación en el estudio de la estabilidad de taludes y la caracterización de materiales geotécnicos.
